Discover the Australian outback on a journey from Adelaide through the Red Centre, all the way to Darwin in the Top End. You will see the beauty of Australia’s vast and varied landscapes including the rugged Flinders Ranges, ancient and iconic Uluru and Kata Tjuta, and the lush tropical wetlands of Kakadu National Park. This tour captures the essence of Australia’s culture, history and diversity and is a must-do for those looking for a real taste of the Aussie Outback.

Day 1: Arrival in Adelaide

Your tour begins in the southern Australian city of Adelaide, capital of the state of South Australia. Arrive in Adelaide and transfer to your hotel.

Day 2: Mannum and the Murray River Cruise

You have the morning free to explore the highlights of this vibrant city before boarding the bus for the two-hour drive to Mannum and then boarding the PS Murray Princess. You sail late afternoon from historic Mannum, the birthplace of the Murray River trade and communication, and head upriver while you enjoy a dinner. As you cruise under floodlight to your overnight mooring at Caurnamont, you may see nocturnal wildlife on the riverbank. Watch for kangaroos, hairy-nosed wombats, tortoises, egrets and many other species.

Day 3: Murray River Cruise

Early morning is time for the keen photographers to be out to capture the special light and the morning movement of wildlife. Prolific birdlife includes pelicans, wrens and swans. Enjoy a leisurely morning and lunch cruising upriver to Blanchetown through one of 13 locks, which maintain the flow and levels of water. This afternoon you moor opposite to the township of Blanchetown for the overnight anchorage. As the last rays of the sun fade, join a guided tour of Burk Salter Wines vineyards and surrounding wetlands and enjoy wine tasting at the cellar door, which is fitted out with beautiful red gum bars.

Day 4: Murray River Cruise

After breakfast, cruise downriver to picturesque Swan Reach. First settled in the 1850’s, the town was originally the largest of five sheep and cattle stations in the area and is now home to native flower and fruit growers. The original Swan Reach homestead is now the Swan Reach Hotel, where you can enjoy an ale or cappuccino overlooking the Murray River (additional cost). Later on join the guided walking tour to visit the Swan Reach Museum, a must see. Cruise downriver after lunch and take in the tranquility as the landscape slides by. When you arrive at Sunnydale, it’s all ashore for the Woolshed Show as guests recreate typical Australian woolshed history. Later visit the Native Wildlife Shelter, where some of South Australia’s most interesting native animals are cared for. And then, of course, there is the great Aussie BBQ, cooked and served in a bush setting on the banks of the mighty Murray River.

Day 5: Murray River Cruise

Today the boat cruises slowly downriver past magnificent cliffs scoured by the river over millions of years. The boat reaches Ngaut Ngaut Aboriginal Reserve, one of Australia’s most significant archaeological sites, for a step back in time. A guided boardwalk tour will take you to view ancient rock carvings and learn about aboriginal history in the area. Return to the boat to cruise downriver to Younghusband. Tonight the Captain and his officers host a spectacular Farewell Captain’s Buffet Dinner. Dress up and dance, if you wish.

Day 6: Murray River Cruise and Adelaide

Today you leave Younghusband and head back to Mannum. After breakfast, say farewell as you arrive at Mannum Wharf and then depart by coach back to Adelaide, arriving at approximately 12:30pm. This afternoon explore the sights of Adelaide, and then join a local food expert for a guided tour of 140-year- old Adelaide Central Market. Enjoy the hustle and bustle, sample the culinary delights, meet the traders and share the history and secrets of the colourful marketplace. Tonight you dine at one of Adelaide’s newest restaurants, La Boca Bar and Grill.

Day 7: Adelaide – Flinders Ranges

Today travel to the Clare Valley for a wine tasting at Jesuit-owned Sevenhill Cellars, the oldest existing winery in the region. Explore the picturesque grounds, including St. Aloysius Church, and take a stroll through the vines before stopping in Clare at lunchtime. Later, travel through the spectacular Flinders Ranges to Wilpena Pound, a remarkable natural amphitheatre covering nearly 8,000 hectares. Pass the intriguing ruins of deserted pastoral leases and keep an eye out for mobs of emu on the plains as dusk draws near.

Day 8: Flinders Ranges – Port Augusta

Take a spectacular walk to Hills Homestead and Wangara Lookout for incredible views of Wilpena Pound. You are likely to see wild emus and kangaroos grazing along the riverbank. Journey through Pichi Richi Pass and historic Quorn on your way to Port Augusta. Visit the Wadlata Outback Centre, and then venture to Cena on Chapel for a delicious dinner.

Day 9: Port Augusta – Coober Pedy

Visit Woomera, then travel through salt lake country, watching as the landscape changes as you near isolated Coober Pedy, Australia’s opal capital! Visit an underground church and home with a local guide and view an opal demonstration. You stay at the well-known Desert Cave Hotel in Coober Pedy.

Day 10: Coober Pedy – Ayers Rock

Cross the border into the Northern Territory and continue to Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. Enter the dual World Heritage-listed national park to enjoy gourmet canapés and wine at the Uluru sunset viewing area, ‘Sunset Strip’. As the sun sets over the western horizon, the evening sky brings out the many shades of colour for which Uluru is renowned.

Day 11: Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) and the Red Centre

See the Red Centre set alight by the morning’s first rays of sunlight. After sunrise, tour the base of Uluru. You may like to take a self-guided stroll around the 11-kilometre base of ‘The Rock’ or enjoy a guided walk with your tour leader to Mutitjulu Waterhole. You’ll view aboriginal rock paintings as your guide interprets their meaning and significance. You’ll also learn about the flora, fauna and cultural traditions of traditional owners, the Anangu. Visit Uluru-Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre where there is time to purchase some locally made aboriginal art and learn more about the Western Desert region. This afternoon visit the spectacular domes of Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) and walk through Walpa Gorge, following the natural creek bed between two of the main domes. Take in a magnificent outback sunset at Kata Tjuta while you enjoy sparkling wine and nibbles.

Day 12: Ayers Rock – Kings Canyon

Travel to Kings Canyon Resort. On the way, marvel at Attila (Mount Conner), the ‘forgotten wonder of Central Australia’, and stop for a lunch break at Kings Creek Station. Originally vacant crown land, the station now runs cattle and is the largest exporter of wild camels in Australia. Learn the intriguing story of owners Ian and Lynn Conway and their dedication to aboriginal children in the region’s remote communities. You can do a six-kilometre rim walk exploration of Kings Canyon, which will reward you with marvelous views of Watarrka National Park, where you’ll be able to see as far as the horizon and get a real feel for the grand scale of this natural wonder. An easier walk along the boulder-strewn canyon floor is also available.

Day 13: Kings Canyon – Alice Springs

Today you journey to Alice Springs. Travel across vast cattle properties and get a feel for just how expansive the outback is. Visit the historic Telegraph Station in Alice Springs, established in 1872, first serving for 60 years as one of 12 stations positioned along the Overland Telegraph Line that stretches 3,000 kilometres to relay messages between Adelaide and Darwin. It later served as a school for aboriginal children and was known as ‘The Bungalow’. Top off the day at Anzac Hill for panoramic views over Alice Springs.

Day 14: Alice Springs

Learn about the life and survival of the Arrernte people, including the search for water and bush food, from a local aboriginal guide at Alice Springs Desert Park. Visit the Nocturnal House and enjoy a captivating Birds of Prey presentation. Continue to the Royal Flying Doctor Service and learn how the facility brings first-class health services to people living in the bush. This evening enjoy a home cooked gourmet BBQ dinner at Earth Sanctuary World Nature Centre as you listen to tales of ecology, culture and astronomy, and even join a sing-a-long accompanied by the didgeridoo and guitar. It will be a night to remember!

Day 15: Alice Springs – Tennant Creek

Your first stop is the School of the Air. Witness a live classroom lesson broadcast over 1.3 million square kilometres to children living in remote locations who would otherwise have no access to public education. Later, travel north towards Tennant Creek, stopping at interesting Wycliffe Well on the way to visit Karlu-Karlu (Devils Marbles). You’ll have plenty of time to walk around the precariously balanced boulders. End the day at Tennant Creek, an old gold mining town along the Stuart Highway.

Day 16: Tennant Creek – Katherine

Today travel north and visit eccentric Daly Waters Historic Pub for a refreshing ale at lunchtime. Continue to Mataranka, ‘Land of the Never Never’. Here you can visit a replica of the original Elsey Homestead, used in the filming of ‘We of the Never Never’, an autobiographical film about Jeannie Gunn’s life in the outback. Or, you may take the palm-lined walkway for a swim in the famous thermal springs – a bit of a must do! Travel on to Katherine for the night.

Day 17: Katherine – Kakadu

Join the local guide on a serene early morning cruise through Katherine Gorge in Nitmiluk National Park. Discover the cultural significance of this ancient waterway to the traditional landowners, the Jawoyn, and keep an eye out for the resident crocodiles. Continue to Kakadu National Park via Pine Creek and treat yourself to a mango smoothie along the way from Mayse’s Cafe! Travel deep into Kakadu for a cruise on the famous Yellow Water Billabong. You should see a stunning variety of birdlife such as sea eagles, brolgas, and with any luck, fascinating little kingfishers. You’ll also see feared estuarine crocodiles basking in the muddy shallows. Continue to Ubirr and view aboriginal rock art dating back some 20,000 years. Climb to the top of this rocky outcrop for spectacular views in the dusk light over the flood plains and escarpment country. You may recognise the location from the famous Australian film, Crocodile Dundee!

Day 18: Kakadu – Darwin

This morning, maybe take an optional flight over Kakadu and Arnhem Land before you travel to Litchfield National Park. You’ll stop at the amazing termite mounds and then Florence Falls to view the famous plunge pool from a high vantage point. Venture on to tropical Wangi Falls for a relaxing swim in the large crystal-clear waterhole before you continue to Darwin. Why not take the opportunity to visit the colourful Mindil Beach Sunset Markets for a spectacular sunset over the Timor Sea.

Day 19: Darwin – the Top End

A day to unwind and explore tropical Darwin with suggestions from your tour leader before meeting up with fellow travellers for a farewell dinner cruise on Darwin Harbour as you watch the sun set over Darwin and the surrounding area.

Day 20: Depart Darwin

This incredible trip comes to an end after breakfast as you transfer to the airport for your flight home.

  • ""Where in the World? Where indeed? Just ask Robyn Bentley and chances are she has been there, and if she hasn’t she has profound and intimate knowledge of every corner of the globe. She works with great tour companies and guarantees a level of adventure that fits our needs. And we have had some amazing ones!

We are lucky enough to have traveled to every continent thanks to arrangements made by Robyn, and her predecessor Mona Hubinette (who sadly died in early 2017). Every trip was a life-changer, every plan meticulous, every piece of advice top notch. Robyn is brilliant and knowledgeable - and a wonderful person as well. For a verbal recommendation feel free to contact us via PTM."

  • "“I recently came back from a trip to the Falklands Island, South Georgia and Antarctica and it was the best trip of my life. I would like to thank Philip from Personal Travel Management, he helped me booked this trip.
I had such high expectations for the trip before I left, and the trip exceed my expectations. I walked among 200,000 king penguins, I went kayaking and a whale passed below my kayak and resurfaced right beside me.

If you need to book a trip I highly recommend booking with Philip. Everything was perfectly organized, I didn’t need to worry about anything.” B.D.

“Thank you so much Philip for arranging our private sunset lagoon tour ( including champagne and hors d’oeuvres) followed by a superbly romantic dinner on a private deck of the ship! Wow! We felt like royalty! You have done it again Philip!” You are a treasure!

With appreciation, Mary Lou and Paul
  • "My name is Eoin White and I am the founder of Sherpaencounters. I been taking groups to Nepal and this year marks my 25th trip to Everest base camp, and my 30th Himalayan trek.
Robyn has been my travel agent for all 30 treks. Over the years I have had my friends and clients who have accompanied me use Robyn as their preferred agent. She takes care of their flight bookings and additional travels in conjunction with their Nepal adventure. She also provides bombproof travel insurance. I have had 6 helicopter evacuations over the past 14 years, and not one claim was ever disputed.

Here's why I always encourage those traveling with me to use Robyn:
    1. She can find even better prices and routes
    2. If you want to change your flight while in a third world country or if things go sour, it can be almost impossible to get anything changed or done. Of the 240 people who have traveled with me, dozens of them for various reasons have needed her help. She is always there for you and can get what seems to be impossible done.
    3. She has become the preferred and most trusted travel agent of all of my friends. If you book with her you will see why.

  • "I met Robyn in March of 2006 when she was an agent for a newly formed Nepal adventure company called Sherpa Encounters. At that time I was interested in trekking mountains worldwide but was frustrated with conventional travel companies. Since that time Robyn, through Personal Travel Management, has sent me to the four corners of the globe. Adventure treks, adventure trips, cruising, flights, hotels and everything in between, Robyn has been able to accommodate my wife's and my travel needs.

Along with her expertise in planning our trips, she has been there for travel support. Circumstances arise on world adventures and Robyn with her network and expertise has been able to aid in any situation we've encountered along the way to a happy resolve. Without Robyn's expertise on world travel, we would not have been able to fulfill our travel dreams. We both give Robyn and Personal Travel Management our personal stamp of approval for any individual or group our personal stamp of approval for all travel needs.

Whether it is trekking some of the highest mountains such as Mt. Everest or cruising to the bottom of the world around Cape Horn, Robyn gets us there and back efficiently and safely.

  • ""Hi Philip, What can I say, you wow me! I have never had such personal, prompt and thorough attention from any business, I think, in my whole life!!! You have truly gone above and beyond for Andrea and me! Thank you so very much for all you have done!
    Jacquie" July 26th, 2016
  • ""Robyn's experience, contacts, attention to detail, quick responses and check-backs - and sense of humour - have provided us with many great trips.
Starting with adventure travel packages and European cycling, we moved on to complex tailor-made trips to places as Brazil, Colombia, Panama, and just recently 4 weeks in India (my 5th visit). As we age, she knows how to make the right recommendations and gets right on to the many details required. We love dealing with her - and the physical distance between us in Vancouver, and Robyn in New Zealand is seamless, and time differences never a problem."
    Juanita and Jim Tupper, 2016
  • "We would just like to pass along how happy we were with the service and attention we received from Robyn while arranging our trip to Africa this year. As we gave fairly short notice for a 5 week trip we were not sure it would be able to be arranged. Robyn was great to work with, easy to get hold of and very prompt at responding to our questions. She did a fabulous job with flights, accommodation and so many helpful suggestions. We had one of our best trips ever with multiple stops, safari, island stay and self drive. Everything went beautifully and exceeded our expectations. We will definitely use Robyn again and would highly recommend her services.
Thank you for the trip of a lifetime!!
    Keith and Rennie Furlotte
  • "We have travelled extensively and to most corners of the earth -- especially to places that are well off the beaten track.

Robyn Bentley has an amazing wealth of knowledge and personal experience, which we have drawn upon and from which we have benefited for more than ten years.

She has assembled adventures for us in South, East and North Africa, Central and South America and a number of countries in Asia (including the ‘Stans, Mongolia, Sri Lanka and India).

Having become familiar with our likes and dislikes, Robyn approaches a travel plan by identifying the options which she knows will be of interest to us. She never “sells” a trip without regard as to whether it is likely to be a success, but instead explores with us those possibilities which we are likely to enjoy.

In 2012, we confidently entrusted Robyn with the responsibility of arranging a trip to Kenya for our family including two grandsons then aged 10 and 12 years and whose mother had never ventured outside North America and who therefore understandably needed assurance that her children would not be placed at unnecessary risk. It was the trip of a lifetime which we will all continue to talk about for decades to come. Robyn knocked that trip for all six of us right out of the ballpark!

We have absolute and unconditional trust in Robyn’s judgment and professionalism – and the testament to that is we have referred a great many friends and family members to her over the years. Unsurprisingly, everyone has returned with glowing reports about her efforts on their behalf.

A word of warning, however!! If you engage Robyn for your next trip…
be prepared to be bitten by the travel bug!

Life is an adventure & Robyn will always be a part of our ongoing travel escapades!
    Susan & Graham Phillips
  • "I have been dealing with Robyn Bentley since 2005 as a leisure travel planner. She has now grown into being both my business and personal travel guru. Her knowledge of connecting from one city to another is second to none. I have a lot of complicated business itineraries and she did it with the most efficient and effective way. She is fast, no nonsense, and she will only give me the best advice. Without her arranging my travel, I would be lost. I highly recommend Ms. Bentley, hands down."
Juliana Yu, VP Finance Reliable Controls
  • "Hi Janice
Just a quick note to let you know that we're back from our trip! Tanzania was absolutely incredible! We had such an adventure and Ole and our driver, Elia, made the experience so special. Over the course of our safari, we saw 110 lions (which Ole and Elia said was an unprecedented number), 12 cheetahs, 5 leopards, 3 black rhino, and countless elephants and giraffes. We also became expert bird watchers (although we had a hard time recalling the names) and enjoyed all the magnificent acacia and baobab trees. The tented camp on the Serengeti was magical - so glad we had the opportunity to stay there! We had a hard time saying goodbye on the last day and have promised Ole that when he comes for a visit in Vancouver we'll help him to explore the city.

Thanks to you both for making this such a special trip and for all the arrangements you made and planning you did!
    Kerry & Will

  • "The river cruise on the Rhine was really good. So very different from the Big Cruises. The tours were excellent. The train journey was a challenge … thank goodness for your (Christine) list of trains and the number of the trains too. I don't think we would have been able to do it without that. Tuscany was great - the house was an old renovated Italian property. We did [follow your suggestions and] go to Cinque Terra - had a wonderful day. So all in all - a very good holiday. Thank you so much for all your help and good suggestions."

Darci is always working to get us the best deals on flights, accommodation and transportation and never once have we been disappointed with her service. She is readily available to book last minute flights, or make flight changes as needed, and with many team events this is an all too common occurrence. Travel planning for a large group can often be very stressful, however Darci is very good at balancing and juggling our teams needs, which helps keep it stress free! I highly recommend Darci's services to any individual who is planning a trip for themselves, or any group coordinator working with large teams. She is unquestionably the best at her job!"
